Chia Seeds

I am about to start another juice fast later this week and thought I would try something new as part of it. It is pretty common for many people (myself included) to feel fairly crappy around the 3rd to 5th day of a juice fast because of the detoxification process.

What happens is that as the juice fast brings in massive amounts of nutrients and weight loss, your body ends up releasing a large amount of toxins that were stored in your body’s cells and fat stores. Your liver does the best it can to filter these toxins out through your bowels, but depending on the level of toxicity in your body, it can get overwhelmed with toxins and they can get reabsorbed by the body– causing headaches, nausea, lack of energy, etc.

This is where the Chia seeds come in. Not only are they very nutritious, they also have a unique property of becoming a tasteless gel once water is absorbed into them. Once in gel form, they are ideal for absorbing large amounts of toxins the liver is trying to get rid of as the Chia seeds pass through the bowels. This can drastically lower the amount of toxins that the body has to reabsorb.

Chia seeds are also very cheap and last for up to 2 years at room temperature, making them a no-brainer to add to a healthy diet/lifestyle.

Other amazing nutritional facts about Chia seeds:

  • 3x the antioxidant strength of blueberries
  • 2.5x the protein in beans
  • 6x the calcium in milk
  • 4.2 grams of Omega-3 per serving
  • 5 grams of fibre per serving
  • 15x the magnesium than broccoli
  • 3x the iron in spinach
